ยป Why do we have the VVPAT printers?

California State Senate Bill 1438 passed in 2004.  This new law requires that all electronic voting systems in use in California on or after January 1, 2006 be equipped with an Accessible Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (or VVPAT).  The VVPAT is to provide a paper printout of the summary screen so that voters may see a paper record of their votes cast.
