» May 19th Special Election Almost Here              Thank you to all of you who have volunteered to work on Tuesday, May 19th.  Our recruitment process is now kicking into high gear.  If you have not volunteered to work yet please consider volunteering by clicking here.  I am pleased to include the results of our training survey in this newsletter (note below).  We have changed many aspects of training in direct response to your comments.

Neal Kelley, Registrar of Voters

» You Responded - We Listened

Nearly 2,000 poll workers responded to our survey regarding training.  With training for the May election coming up soon we have made adjustments as a direct result of your input.  You can see the questions and the responses by clicking here.  While we cannot implement every suggestion we are in the process of expanding our online training components, changing class offerings, implementing home training just to name a few.

The Statewide Special Election will be taking place on May 19, 2009.  Much of our planning centers around this election calendar which highlights major milestones.
»Stay Connected for the May 19 Statewide Special Election
Keep up to date with the latest newsfeeds, videos, podcasts and press releases for the upcoming election.
»Proposition Information
May's ballot will have 6 State Propositions. This is a list of the propositions, with the text that will appear on the ballot.
» Ensuring Your Vote Counts - As A Poll Worker

It is important to us that our Poll Workers have the opportunity to vote.  Since we will not be offering Early Voting for this election, we encourage all Poll Workers serving outside their home precinct to vote-by-mail to guarantee their vote is cast. You can also vote your ballot at your leisure and ensure that you drop your ballot in the ballot box where you are volunteering.

» Batteries Not Included                                         You will find that your eSlates just got a little lighter. The heavy batteries that came with the original purchase of the voting systems have been removed. After much study and deliberation we decided to save the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars for the purchase of new batteries.  A dark eSlate screen will greet you if the power is not plugged in.  Paper ballots are available as back up if needed.  You will find that batteries are still in the JBC and the DAU to allow for curbside voting.

» Hardware Proves to be "Software"                          The source of many Election Day power problems were tracked to the black power converter connected to the VVPAT printers. The specific issue is with a fragile glass fuse inside. It does not take much effort to break the fuse and it is not detectable until you try to power up the system. We have modified our training to discuss this issue and ask that you handle the black power converter with much care. We will provide a friendly reminder in the form of a “Fragile” sticker on the converter.
