How does it work?
The Registrar’s program takes a broad and detailed approach to introducing students to the inner-workings of this vital and complex government agency. In the first component the Registrar of Voters will visit the students in the classroom setting to provide historical background to elections. The second component has the students embark on a field trip to the Registrar of Voters Department wherein they will receive hands-on training in various Registrar functions. The Registrar will then return to the school to assist the students in conducting one of their elections.
In the first part of the program the Registrar of Voters will teach in the classroom setting and provide an historical background to elections. There have been many changes in the process of voting in the United States during its history leading to what we see in our polling places today. The students will also be introduced to the voting systems and challenges the Orange County Registrar of Voters faces in conducting elections for the third largest voting jurisdiction in the United States.
The students are then invited to visit the Registrar of Voters office to be introduced to experience first-hand the complexities of conducting elections. Students will work hands-on at the Department creating their own ballots. Lessons in graphic arts, publishing and precise proofing are just a sampling of what students will learn.
The next step is to put what the students have learned into practice. The Registrar of Voters will bring their mobile voting unit to the school to assist the students in conducting their ASB or homecoming election. Students will be directly involved in assembly, tally, and certification of votes cast.
