Election Results FAQs

ยป What Happens When Results Come Into the Registrar's Office?

When election supplies arrive at the Registrar of Voters' office there is a tremendous amount of activity that takes place.  The vans are offloaded in rapid succession (sometimes multiple vans at a time).  The faster we can process each van will also speed up the results that will be posted on our web site on Election Night.  Each Judges Booth Controller (JBC) which contains a sealed memory card is scanned in as it arrives on conveyors.  The seal is then broken and the card is removed.  Since each poll site has its own JBC the precinct numbers are entered into a database to track each incoming card.  The memory cards are then transferred into our tally room (which is guarded by armed Sheriff's deputies and under 24-hour surveillance).

Each card is then read and the data from each precinct is downloaded into a database that stores the votes.  These computers do not have any external connection to an outside network and are not connected to any internal network (as required by law).  Once the votes are tallied and the reports are proofed a disk is made and removed from this secure room.  The unofficial results are then uploaded to our web site outside of this secure tally room.
